What is an Emerging Leader?

The Emerging Leaders Program brings together a highly select, diverse group of rising leaders between the ages of 30 to 40 from the private, public, and nonprofit sectors. The program aims to bring advanced global thinking, insights, and connections back to their organizations and help them become part of the fabric that makes Chicago a leading global city. But what does it mean to be an Emerging Leader? Flip through the slides below to get a behind-the-scenes look.

Emerging Leaders

Increase Global Knowledge

Emerging Leaders develop their understanding of global leadership and policy through a thought-provoking year of dialogue, global skills trainings, exposure to global leaders, site visits, special events, and opportunities to become part of Chicago’s global network. Emerging Leaders travel to Washington, DC with Council leadership to get an inside look into the policymaking process on some of the biggest global issues.

Emerging Leaders

Make Connections

Emerging Leaders become part of a skilled network of globally fluent leaders who will continue to raise the bar for Chicago as a leading global city. The program offers an opportunity for organizations across Chicago to support the Council in developing the global acumen, ability, and network of their high potential leaders.

Emerging Leaders

Develop Leadership Skills

In addition to deepening their global knowledge, Emerging Leaders bolster their leadership with skill building sessions, including media training, policy analysis, negotiation through difference, and others. These sessions are led by Council staff and outside experts.

Emerging Leaders

Demonstrate Impact

Emerging Leaders understand the role of Chicago as a global city and are prepared to lead it. Alumni include Khadine Bennett, Associate Legislative Director, ACLU of Illinois; Sean Casten, US House of Representatives, IL 6th District; Jeanne Gang (pictured left), renowned architect and founder and principal of Studio Gang; and Raja Krishnamoorthi (pictured right), US House of Representatives, IL 8th District.

“The world is only getting smaller and more connected. Today’s leaders need a global perspective to succeed. The Emerging Leaders Program selects the best and brightest in the city and empowers them to shape our shared global future.”
