Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe was appointed as commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service on September 12, 2011. Previously, he was the acting deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service. He has vast experience in crime investigation and strategic leadership of major public events, public disorder, and organized crime—particularly involving the use of firearms. Since January 2011 he has led the review of the national domestic extremism units. He was also lead HMI on thematic areas of policing such as the Olympics, counter terrorism, and serious organized crime. He has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Law by Sheffield Hallam University in November 2012, an Honorary Fellowship at Merton College Oxford in June 2013 and an Honorary Doctorate in Law by Sheffield University in July 2013.
