Founder and Principal, Happy City

Charles Montgomery is an award-winning author, urbanist, and leader of transformative experiments and interventions to improve wellbeing in cities. His acclaimed book, Happy City, Transforming Our Lives through Urban Design, examines the intersection between urban design and the emerging science of happiness. Charles is principal of Happy City, a Vancouver-based consultancy which draws on research in psychology, neuroscience, and public health to help create happier, healthier, more resilient places. Charles and his team have tested the emotional and behavioral effects of public space in New York, Vancouver, West Palm Beach, and Seattle. Their experiments have identified the link between place design, social trust, and altruism. Charles now helps governments and property developers on three continents translate evidence into pragmatic plans to achieve healthier, happier cities.
